competitors to form a division competitors may be
moved “up” or “down”. Competitors must perform
patterns appropriate to their rank or one rank below.
Ladies and men will compete against each other in
Individual Patterns Competition. Individual patterns
competition divisions may be further split depending
on age and number of available competitors. Black Belt
competitors should expect to be conversant with all patterns below their level.
Rules Synopsis: Pattern Comptetition
• Gup level competitors will be bracketed by pattern to be performed and
will compete “head to head” with two performing simultaneously in
the ring.
• Competitors must select either the form appropriate to their Gup level
or to the
Gup level immediately below and may perform only that pattern.
• Judges will vote either “right” or “left” for
the winner.
• Winner will advance in the brackets.
• Judges must be an odd number.
• Only the Chang-Han Patterns (the “Chon-Ji” series) are permitted;
forms will be
graded to the I.T.F. objective standard.
• Black Belt competitors are graded and compete on the same basis, but they
will
select any from among the patterns appropriate to their level (and may select
one
level lower if recently promoted).
• Black Belts may be required to perform an additional form on levels below
their
own as a component of the competition.
•Women and men compete in the same division
Rules Synopsis: Breaking Competition
The tournament breaking will be a USTF specialty breaking competition.
The
competitors will be divided into a black belt and a colored
belt division. Colored
belts must be at least 6th gup to compete in breaking.
• Black belt division: each competitor has a choice of one of 3 kicks:
Flying high kick; Flying turning kick; Mid Air 180º back piercing.
• Colored belt division: each competitor must use a flying side piercing
kick.
• Each competitor can choose the number of boards they wish to break.
• Scoring: 1 point for each board broken. If no boards are broken, 1/2 point
for
touching the target. The competitor with the highest number of points will
receive a trophy. The second and third highest scores will receive medals.
If there is a tie, the first and second tiebreaker formats will be applied in
order
as described below.
All tied competitors will:
1. Attempt the same break with the opposite side (e.g. left
foot instead of the
right foot) using one board less than that successfully broken
by the tied
competitors in the previous round.
2. Competitors will submit
a secret closed bid specifying the number of boards
that they will attempt with a new different break. This break
will be chosen by
the Tournament Director prior to the start of the event and not disclosed until
it
is time for them to decide on the number of boards that they will attempt.
Free sparring Competition:
• Required Gear-- coated foam style only, no leather, no loose laces, headgear,
gloves. Boots must cover instep and ankle, gloves must cover knuckles, wrists
and hands, headgear must cover top, back and sides of head. Males must wear cup.
Mouth guard is mandatory. Finger and toenails must be trimmed and clean.
• Contact Hard (excessive) contact is strictly forbidden,
and student can be suspended for violation.
• No sweeps.
• No contact to the face on the Gup levels.
• Punches may be thrown in the direction of the face but
must terminate four inches from the face. (Such a punch may result in a score
if and only if it is in good form and there is enough reserved distance that
it could reach the face; you cannot score if fully extended.). Black belts may
contact the face. Light contact only, defined as “touch with no impact”.
• A fallen fighter and his opponent must stop immediately and may not continue
until ordered to do so.
• Forbidden target areas: below the waist, back behind
back shoulder line, throat, eyes, neck.
• Permitted contact target areas: head (to headgear only,
not direct to face except for Black Belts), chest, abdomen and side of torso
in front of back shoulder line.
• Scoring: Sparring is continuous, no stopping for points.
1 point for body attack, two for foot attack to head, and add one point if any
technique is airborne. Violation of any rule on a persistent basis at the election
of the referee (3 warnings) or more serious violation of a rule on one occasion
will result in minus points.
• Disqualifications: Poor sportsmanship, excessive contact,
causing bleeding, hard blind technique, or because the referee regards the contact
as dangerous.
• Winner: Competitor with the most corner judge ballots
on completion of a two-minute round wins. Center referee ballot counts only in
